MEMORIA

Memory has the characteristic of imagery accumulation. French film theorist Christian Metz says, that "reality does not tell stories, but memory is entirely imaginative." Within the created world of images, memory carries out a continuous movement back and forth, where it doesn't need a linear editing of time. Through the experiences, the memory chooses and reserves fragments of reality and usually re-constitutes their meanings.

For the exhibition MEMORIA, Erenus composes about 50 pieces of canvas, which were created  between 2004-2016. The artist considers these canvases as partial images seeping through her memory. During each new exhibition process, at each new site, where the works meet with the audience, she reinterprets them within the scope of a constructive intellectuality and aims to introduce a non-chronological concept of continuity.

The Trail of Time

Özlem Kalkan Erenus’ solo show “The Trail of Time” was held at Prof. Dr. Yusuf Vardar MÖTBE Cultural Centre Art Gallery of Ege University, March 4-21, 2014.

In her works concerning the individual and social aspects of humans, Erenus applies cement, sand and other unconventional materials on canvas, exploring a new surface structure along with the possibilities of deformation. Based on the shades left in the mind of the artist; faces, crowds and ever congested streets are transforming into signs of moments and memories.

Remains of Yesterday

In her solo show “Masquerade; Fragmented Mental Portraits” held at Konak Municipality’s Izmir Mask Museum between February 13 – April 10 2013, Özlem Kalkan Erenus presented two poliptych arrangements of works selected from her series “Remains of Yesterday” along with a video presentation with the title “Remains of Yesterday’s Journey” and a photographic documentation concerning former exhibitions of these mask-portraits.

en-ONE-terre

In her solo show “en-ONE-terre” held in Ayvalık Tarlakuşu Organic Studio between October 29 – November 12 2011, Özlem Kalkan Erenus presented an inventory record of her works from the period 2004-2011. The exhibition showed a collocation of her consecutive series; “Remains of Yesterday”, “Stand My Ground, Stand Your Ground” and “Rooted in Earth and Sky”.
According to the art critic Özkan Eroğlu, “each stage of Erenus’ work can be considered as the root of her next stage”. Eroğlu states, that “since the very beginning Erenus tends to focus on fragments in order to compose her own building brick.”

Stand My Ground, Stand Your Ground

By the invitation of TransCultural Exchange Foundation (Boston - USA) Özlem Kalkan Erenus co-operated with Northern Irish artist Tommy Barr for the project “Stand My Ground, Stand Your Ground”, which took part at the global project “Here, There And Everywhere: Anticipating The Art of the Future” among 60 projects selected from all around the world.
In October 2008, Istanbul leg of the project-show was held in the showcases of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Taksim Art Gallery and the Northern Ireland Exhibition was shown at Derry Museum. Finally the video presentation of the project including both venues was shown at the conference “International Opportunities in the Arts” held by TCE in Boston, April 2009.
